It was probably already on the sales counter on Saturday or offered as processed food: two tons of rotten meat! The gruesome shipment was already on its way to the buyer and client in Linz when police officers found it by chance and removed it from circulation.
The patrol of the State Traffic Department of Upper Austria brought a small truck to the checkpoint next to the Innkreis highway in Kematen am Innbach and were surprised that nothing was wrong here. No papers, the 30-year-old driver from Braunau with a migrant background was not employed anywhere and had two asylum seekers – a Syrian and a stateless person – on board. But that wasn’t all: the weighbridge sounded the alarm.
More than 2000 kilos
The small truck was only allowed to have a load of 200 kilos on board. But it contained more than 2,000 kilos of meat. There were also no loading documents available for the meat of calves, cattle, chickens and lambs.
Everything spoiled
Because there was no cooling, experts from the veterinary practice came in. The quick result: rotten meat! Everything spoiled. The driver, an illegal worker, admitted that he had been instructed by a company in Linz to load the meat into a truck in Braunau and take it to the capital.
The truck was actually going to Germany, but was returned to its destination because there were problems with the meat. The goods were therefore probably offered to known buyers in Austria.
Investigations are underway
The authorities had the rotten meat destroyed at the rendering plant in Regau. The driver and customer – who runs a market in Linz – are reported and further investigation follows.
