Fighters infiltrate – Army: Hamas nests more stubbornly than expected

Date:

The Hamas terror cells operating on Israeli soil are more persistent than expected. According to the army, fighters from the radical Islamic terror group are still in at least seven populated areas in the south of the country.

“It will take longer than expected to return to a defensive security situation,” Lt. Col. Richard Hecht admitted. “Our soldiers continue to fight and hunt down the last terrorists remaining on Israel’s soil,” Hecht continued.

Senior military officials compared the Hamas attacks, which began Saturday morning from the air, sea and land, to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States. “This could be September 11 and Pearl Harbor all rolled into one,” said Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus. “Never before have so many Israelis been killed in an attack.” But even after the moment of surprise for the Palestinians, the Israeli security forces are still far from having everything under control.

The border is not yet secured everywhere
As became known on Monday morning, not all border crossings are yet closed. It is therefore believed that Palestinian militants may continue to enter Israel. Why the armed forces were surprised and why the intelligence services were not in the picture are questions that need to be answered. An investigation has already begun, Israeli officials told the BBC on Sunday. However, this will certainly “take years”.

At least 700 people were killed in Israel as a result of the wave of terror. More than 2,380 other people were injured, according to the Ministry of Health. Many are in critical condition and therefore the death toll could continue to rise. At least 436 people have been killed in counterattacks by the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip so far, the Gaza Health Ministry announced on Sunday evening. More than 2,270 people were injured. Rockets were also fired into Israel on Monday evening.

UN school bombed
The Israeli Air Force in turn attacked numerous Hamas positions in the Gaza Strip. According to the UN, a school of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Middle East (UNRWA) was also hit and severely damaged. The aid agency said on Sunday that more than 225 people had escaped attacks. But no casualties were reported, the report said.
