Google’s Russian subsidiary file for bankruptcy and start bankruptcy proceedingsaccording to a document published in the Russian Official Federal Register Fedresurs.
The above document indicates that “since March 22, 2022, the company has foreseen its own bankruptcy and inability to meet its monetary obligations.” In addition, it indicates that Google’s Russian office has issued a notification about its intention to declare “insolvent”.
For now it is not known whether the cause of the bankruptcy is the fines imposed on millionaires by the Russian authorities to Google, after the refusal to remove content considered illegal in the country, or the request of Russian media against the subsidiary of the technology company.
Evidently the company blocked eight million ads related to the Russian military campaign in Ukraine, and prevented Russian companies from advertising abroad. The company is estimated to have removed ads from more than 60 official Russian media outlets. In addition, it banned Russian state-funded media from receiving money through its platforms.
According to the Interfax bureau, in 2021, Google Russia’s losses amounted to 26 billion rubles (about $409 million).
In any case, the subsidiary has indicated that Google’s free services (including Gmail and YouTube) will continue to function in the country despite the closure of its office.
