Date:

The Nobel Prize winner for chemistry Martin Karplus, born in Austria and expelled to the US by the Nazis, died on December 28 at the age of 94 “peacefully at his home in Cambridge” (US state of Massachusetts). .

Karplus received the Nobel Prize in 2013 together with Michael Levitt and Arieh Würstel for pioneering work on the development of universal computer models for predicting chemical processes.

As a member of a Jewish medical family who had to flee his homeland as a child in 1938, he never gave up his reserved attitude towards Austria.

“Good for reconciliation”
The professor, who works at Harvard University, has always felt that the country’s efforts to approach the country and its representatives after the Nobel Prize was awarded were “a bit late.” Nevertheless, he believed that Austria’s invitations and awards of the American chemist were “good for reconciliation.”

Statement from Harvard University:

Cooking is a great passion
Karplus was not only successful as a scientist. His passions also include photography and cooking. His photographs have been shown in exhibitions around the world and he has cooked in Michelin three-star restaurants in France and Spain.
