Macron will only appoint a prime minister once a compromise has been reached to “build a solid majority”

The French President, Emmanuel Macronwarned today that it will only appoint a prime minister once French political forces have made a commitment to “build a solid majority” and in the meantime the current government will continue to exercise its responsibilities.

“Divided in the first round, united by mutual withdrawals in the second, elected thanks to the votes of their former opponents, only the republican forces represent an absolute majority. The nature of these elections, marked by a clear demand for change and sharing of power, power forces them to build a coalition with a broad base,” Macron said in a letter to citizens.

The French president has warned that this means he must “give the political forces some time to work out these commitments calmly and with mutual respect,” he said in the letter, published in several regional media and also released by the Elysée.

Macron has also maintained that no one really won the election, because “no political force has obtained a sufficient majority on its own,” and the blocs or coalitions that emerge from the elections “are all in the minority.”

Macron’s words, urging the parties to work together, are above all a dash of cold water for the expectations of the left-wing coalition of the New Popular Front (NFP), which is the leading force in the National Assembly in terms of seats (182), although very far from an absolute majority (289).

As things stand, the French left has sharply criticized Macron’s letter. “It is the return of the royal veto on universal suffrage. It is intended to give time to form a new coalition by making plans after the elections,” he criticized in X. Jean-Luc Melenchonfounder of La Francia Insumisa (LFI), one of the parties that make up the coalition that emerged on Sunday as the best candidate in terms of seats, together with the Socialist Party (PS), the Communists and the environmentalists.

The leader of the environmental activists, Marine Tondelierhas accused the president of not recognizing the election results and warned that his refusal is damaging the country and democracy. “You can’t win and lose at the same time,” the environmentalist stressed.

On the far right, Macron’s position has not been better received either. “Emmanuel Macron is organizing the paralysis of the country by placing the far left in power after unworthy arrangements. And his message from now on is: fix yourself,” he complained on the networks.
