In view of the bloody violence in Israel and the Russian war of aggression against his country, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for a joint fight against terror. In his daily video address, he reiterated Israel’s right to defend itself against Hamas attacks.
“Terror has opened too many fronts against humanity: the war against Ukraine, the war in the Middle East and the terrible destabilization in Africa,” Zelensky said in his evening video message broadcast from Kiev on Sunday.
“Terrorists must lose”
“Israel has every right to defend itself against terror. Just like any other country. And it is important that the entire world responds to terror in a united and principled way. “No support for terrorists!” Zelensky said. “Wherever they fire their missiles and whomever they attack, terrorists must lose.”
In Ukraine, people are reacting particularly sensitively to what is happening, the Ukrainian president said. “Thousands of rockets in the sky over Israel, people being killed in the middle of the street, cars carrying civilians being shot down, hostages being abused. Unfortunately, terror has brought all this to the streets of Ukrainian cities and towns.”
Netanyahu promised solidarity
Zelensky had earlier assured Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a telephone conversation of solidarity in the fight against the terrorist organization Hamas. He announced via X (formerly Twitter) that he had also expressed his condolences to Netanyahu in view of the many deaths (see tweet below).
Kiev’s position is clear, Zelensky said: “Around the world, those who bring terror and death must be held accountable. (…) And next week we will work with our partners to ensure world unity in the fight against terror,” he continued.
Kiev remains dependent on Western aid
Zelensky did not provide specific dates, but NATO defense ministers will meet in Brussels this Wednesday and Thursday. The meeting will also discuss continued military support to Ukraine in its fight against the Russian invasion. Kiev hopes that the West will not give up its help to the country attacked by Russia.
In view of the situation at home, Zelensky once again praised Ukraine’s defenders. “And today, tonight I want to thank all our people who save lives, who do everything they can so that terror loses,” he said.
