Call to flee – Israel: Gaza border fence back “under control”

Date:

The Israeli army says it has regained control of the Gaza Strip border fence. Mines would be placed in areas where Hamas fighters had broken through, military spokesman Daniel Hagari said on army radio on Tuesday morning. Gaza residents were urged to flee to Egypt.

Regarding rumors that armed fighters used tunnels to enter Israeli territory, Hagari said the military does not have such information. Following the devastating attacks on Israel by Hamas terrorists, there are increasing signs of an impending Israeli ground offensive in the Gaza Strip.

Israel ordered the complete closure of the area, which is only 40 kilometers long and six to 12 kilometers wide, while the army mobilized 300,000 reservists. “What Hamas will experience will be harsh and terrible. We are just beginning,” said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, vowing revenge.

“Anyone who can get out” has to go
On Tuesday, the Israeli army urged Palestinians seeking safety from airstrikes in the Gaza Strip to flee to Egypt. “I am aware that the Rafah crossing is still open,” army chief Richard Hecht told reporters, referring to the border crossing between the Gaza Strip and Egypt. “I would encourage anyone who can get out to go out.”

Attacks currently from water and air
The Israeli army continued to attack Palestinian militant targets in the Gaza Strip in its counter-attacks following Hamas’s terrorist attacks in Israel. The army announced late Monday evening that the positions had been attacked from the air and from ships. The army bombed, among other things, weapons depots, tunnels and a Hamas command center in a mosque.

In addition, a meeting place and a residential building of Islamic Jihad members were hit, the report said. Two terrorists were killed.

Fighting is also taking place in the West Bank
There were also renewed clashes that resulted in fatalities in the West Bank. Three Palestinians were killed in clashes with Israeli security forces in Ramallah on Monday, according to the Health Ministry. There was also fighting on Israel’s northern border with Lebanon, raising concerns about the spread of the conflict. Israeli soldiers shot several gunmen who entered Israel, the Israeli military said.

The Shia organization Hezbollah, which like Hamas is an ally of Iran, denied involvement and fired several rockets into Israel in retaliation. The radical Islamist Al-Quds Brigades later claimed responsibility for the attack on Israel.

Panic buying in Israel
The Israeli army has ordered people in the country to stock up on sufficient food, water and medicine. The army said on Monday that supplies should last at least 72 hours – apparently given the threat of military conflict with the Islamist Hamas.

According to Israeli media, supermarkets were then full of people, but many shelves were empty. The Army then emphasized that it was just a reminder of a standard recommendation and not a new instruction.

The US is not sending ground troops
The US Presidential Office said the US will not deploy ground troops to Israel, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said. The US government expects additional security requests from Israel and will seek to fulfill them as quickly as possible.

There is no doubt that Iran has some level of involvement in supporting Hamas, but the US has seen no concrete evidence that Iran was directly involved in planning the current attack. US President Biden wants to give a speech on the situation in Israel on Tuesday at 1 p.m. local time (7 p.m. CEST).
