According to police chief Jaroslaw Szymczyk a few days ago, an explosion of a gift from Ukraine at the Polish police station was accidentally caused by himself. Szymczyk told radio station Rmf.fm on Saturday that used grenade launchers were among the gifts he received during a working visit to Ukraine.
“When I was about to move the spent grenade launchers, which were a gift from the Ukrainians, there was an explosion.” The blast happened when he placed one of the grenade launchers upright on the ground, the police chief said. “The explosion was strong – the force of the impact pierced the floor and damaged the ceiling.” Szymczyk suffered minor injuries in the accident and required hospital treatment.
Military souvenirs as popular gifts
As the radio station reported, military souvenirs such as used grenade launchers are among the gifts Ukrainian officials like to give to foreign visitors. Szymczyk’s delegation had been assured that transport across the border to Poland would not be a problem, as the devices would only be worth scrap.
The explosion took place at the police headquarters in Warsaw on Wednesday, according to the Polish Interior Ministry. The statement from the ministry spoke only of the explosion of a gift Szymczyk received during his business trip to Ukraine on December 11 and 12. The police chief had met the leadership of the Ukrainian police and civil defense there. He is said to have received the gift, which later exploded, from the head of a Ukrainian agency.
