Hippo spat out boy (2) after the attack

Date:

Little Paul narrowly survived a hippo attack in Kampala.

Little Paul Iga was playing by the river near his village of Katwe Kabatoro in Uganda when, without warning, a hippo appeared and pulled the boy into the water.

The animal had counted without Chrispas Bagonza – a courageous eyewitness who reacted with lightning speed. The hippo “grabbed the child by the head and devoured half his body,” local police said. But Chrispas threw rocks at it and screamed until he spat the boy out reluctantly.

The two-year-old suffered a hand injury and was taken to hospital. There he received a vaccination against rabies as a precaution. However, he suffered no permanent injury.

Hippos are considered an endangered species
Although they are herbivores, they are still dangerous to humans. They have been known to attack boats and canoes. Each year, approximately 500 people worldwide are killed by hippo attacks. Paul’s parents are all the happier that their son survived.
