Ukraine said the Russian army was subjected to “massive” shelling of the city of Avdiivka in the east of the country on Tuesday. “The enemy is trying to encircle the city,” the head of the military government, Vitaly Barabash, told the AFP news agency.
The situation is rapidly deteriorating. The shelling of the city began around 8 a.m. “and is still continuing,” Barabasch said in the afternoon. “The risk of the city being occupied has existed for a year. But today the situation is rapidly deteriorating.”
According to the information, about 1,600 inhabitants currently live in Avdiivka; before the start of the Russian war of aggression there were 32,000. The city is located just 13 kilometers from Donetsk, the ‘capital’ of the Russian-controlled Ukrainian region of the same name.
Attacks also in the south and northeast
On Tuesday evening, Russia also attacked southern Ukraine again with dozens of drones. According to the regional military administration, Ukrainian air defenses destroyed 23 Iranian ‘Shahed’ kamikaze drones over the Odessa region alone.
Russia has been waging a war of aggression against Ukraine for almost twenty months now, regularly attacking the neighboring country with drone, missile and artillery attacks. The strategically important regions in southern Ukraine are always a target because of the ports on the Black Sea and the Danube.
