Criticism from the UN: – The closure of Gaza is contrary to international law

Date:

The United Nations has sharply criticized Israel’s complete closure of the Gaza Strip. Under international humanitarian law, depriving people of what they need to survive is prohibited, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said in Geneva on Tuesday.

“Sieges that endanger the lives of civilians by depriving them of essential supplies are prohibited under international humanitarian law,” Türk said. “Restricting the freedom of movement of people and goods during a siege can only be justified by military necessity, otherwise it amounts to collective punishment.” According to Türk, Israeli airstrikes have hit residential buildings, schools and UN facilities.

The WHO calls for a humanitarian corridor
The World Health Organization called for a humanitarian corridor to feed the civilian population in the Gaza Strip. It must be possible to provide people with the essentials, a WHO spokesperson said in Geneva on Tuesday. By Monday afternoon, 13 health facilities in the Gaza Strip had come under fire as a result of Israeli attacks, the spokesman said. Six employees were killed and four were injured. According to Israeli reports, a medic died in attacks by Palestinians in Israel. Under international humanitarian law, health facilities must be protected and protected from attack, the spokesperson stressed.

According to the UN children’s agency UNICEF, hundreds of Israeli and Palestinian children have died since fighting began after the major attack on Israel by the radical Islamist Palestinian group Hamas. UNICEF said numerous other children have been injured in the past 72 hours.

The headquarters of the Palestinian aid agency UNRWA has been so badly damaged by Israeli shelling that work can no longer continue, a UNRWA representative said. Israel responded with air strikes to terrorist attacks by the Islamist Hamas in the Israeli border area, which killed about 900 and injured more than 2,600. The Israeli military said more than 200 terrorist targets were bombed on Tuesday evening.
