The German government wants to help Ukraine militarily this coming winter with a large supply of air defense systems, tanks and ammunition. According to Berlin, this further increases the operational readiness of the Ukrainian armed forces.
The Defense Ministry announced in Berlin on Tuesday that the second “Patriot” air defense system, promised last week, will include the fire control center and radar apparatus, eight additional launchers and more than 60 guided missiles.
Package worth a billion euros
In addition, Germany will deliver more IRIS-T systems in October: a third IRIS-T SLM with medium-range guided missiles and a second IRIS-T SLS for short range, also with guided missiles. There are also three additional Gepard anti-aircraft gun tanks. The entire air defense package is worth about a billion euros.
“Germany will continue to support Ukraine with what it needs most – with air defense, ammunition and tanks,” said German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD). This will further enhance the operational readiness of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the coming months.
Germany is also putting together a support package for the Ukrainian special forces, consisting of vehicles, weapons and personal equipment worth more than 20 million euros. In addition, additional 155 mm ammunition is arriving. In the coming weeks, another ten Leopard 1A5 main battle tanks, 15 protected transport vehicles and almost 20 protected medical vehicles will arrive in Ukraine.
NATO defense ministers meet in Brussels
The defense ministers of the 31 NATO countries will meet in Brussels on Wednesday for a two-day meeting. Shortly before the start of the NATO meeting, the US is organizing consultations with the so-called Ukraine contact group on Wednesday morning. The arms deliveries to the country attacked by Russia are coordinated through them.
