If the government in Rome gets its way, the southern European country’s return to nuclear energy cannot happen quickly enough. Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini hopes that the first nuclear reactor will be put into operation as early as 2032. And he also has a personal wish.
“As a Milanese, I want the first nuclear power plant to be inaugurated in Milan. “I would like to have a last-generation nuclear reactor in my city,” Salvini said on Wednesday. 2032 should be an important year for Italy. “The first train on the Turin-Lyon high-speed line will run in 2032. In the same year, the first train will run from Bolzano to Innsbruck in 25 minutes, and another train will cross the Strait of Messina bridge between Sicily and mainland Italy,” Salvini assured.
Berlusconi already wanted nuclear power plants
In 1987 – a year after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster – Italians voted in a referendum to phase out nuclear energy. The last nuclear power plants were closed in 1990. The first attempts to return under former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi were initially suspended due to the Fukushima disaster.
Now Salvini wants to hold a referendum on Italy’s return to nuclear energy production. This would allow Italy to return to “clean nuclear energy of the latest generation,” the Lega politician explained. Italy is surrounded by neighboring countries that generate energy through nuclear power plants and therefore have a competitive advantage over Italian companies.
Less dependency than goal
In Italy the issue is controversial. While the League has been campaigning for months for the country’s return to nuclear energy, some opposition parties such as the Five Star Movement are opposing this. Italy is trying to reduce its dependence on foreign countries for energy supplies.
