More than seventy crocodiles have escaped from a farm in the southern Chinese city of Maoming (Guandong province). Chinese media reported that a nearby lake overflowed its banks, allowing the reptiles to escape. Authorities have asked residents not to go outside.
There are believed to have been at least 69 adult crocodiles and six young animals at the crocodile farm in southern China. As Beijing News reported, emergency services were dispatched to locate and capture the missing animals using sonar equipment. However, major floods make the search enormously more difficult.
First reptiles captured
Some crocodiles were swimming in the water. Emergency services traveled in boats wearing helmets and safety vests. By Tuesday morning, some crocodiles had already been recaptured and their mouths and limbs temporarily tied together.
Typhoon ‘Haikui’ made landfall in southeastern Fujian province on September 5 and weakened to a tropical storm. Last week it caused major damage in the densely populated city of Shenzhen. Neighboring Hong Kong was also hit by its worst storm in 140 years.
Heavy rain fell for days in southern China, triggering more than 100 landslides (see video above). According to Chinese media reports, at least seven people have already been killed and another 1,360 people are trapped in the floods. Three people are still missing. The weather bureau raised the storm warning to the highest level of the four-level warning system. Previously, more than 101 liters of rain per square meter fell within three hours.
