An 80-year-old motorist caused extensive damage to the road in Hard (Vorarlberg) on Wednesday. Due to an accident, the retiree set off a destructive chain reaction.
On Wednesday around noon, the 80-year-old driver drove into the parking lot of a supermarket in Hard with his 77-year-old wife as a passenger. For some unknown reason, his foot caught on the accelerator pedal and he involuntarily accelerated.
The automatic Jeep Wrangler started moving and darted across the parking lot at high speed. While still on the property, the out-of-control vehicle collided head-on with another vehicle parked in the parking lot, pushing it about 20 meters across the property. The car and the retired couple then made their way through an aluminum fence and over a meter high wall down the main street.
On the street, the all-terrain vehicle collided with a telephone pole, which fell over due to the enormous impact and damaged a garden gate of a house. The 80-year-old driver then decided to reverse gear and crashed into the wall over which he had previously fired on the main road. This time, however, the jeep was stopped.
As a result of the odyssey, both the 80-year-old and his passenger were injured to an unspecified extent and taken to the LKH Bregenz with the rescue. All vehicles and objects involved were heavily damaged. In addition to several police forces with two vehicles, the fire brigade Hard was also deployed with about 12 emergency services. The road in the vicinity of the accident had to be closed temporarily.
