The European Union will discuss its next steps in light of the recent escalation of violence in the Middle East at a summit meeting on Tuesday. President Charles Michel of the EU summit announced this on Saturday evening
Michel reiterated the positions expressed in recent days by leading EU politicians, according to which Hamas’ brutal terrorist acts “cannot be justified by anything”, that there is solidarity with the Israeli people and that Israel has the right to self-defense “in accordance with international law”.
“This unfolding tragedy has many consequences for Europe,” Michel said, explaining his decision for the special EU summit, which will take place on Tuesday at 5:30 pm (CEST).
Michel: “Hostages must be released immediately”
Michel said the hostages kidnapped by Hamas should be released immediately and without any conditions. At the same time, Michel complained about the “tragic” conditions in the Gaza Strip after massive Israeli shelling and an imposed blockade. This is raising alarm bells in the international community.
Michel stressed that the EU must provide humanitarian support and prevent the conflict from spreading regionally. The importance of the commitment to a lasting and sustainable peace “based on a two-state solution” should not be lost sight of, as the former Belgian Prime Minister called for “increased efforts” in the peace process in the Middle East.
Michel warns of tensions and a wave of refugees
Michel also expressed concern about the potential negative impact of the conflict on social cohesion in Europe. “This conflict could also have greater consequences for the security of our societies. If we are not careful, it could increase tensions between different communities and promote extremism,” he warned. Ultimately, it could also lead to a new wave of refugees heading to Europe. “We absolutely must tackle all these challenges together,” says Michel.
