Train accident, injuries, contamination: On Friday and Saturday, the central shunting yard in Vienna was the scene of an emergency exercise by ÖBB, professional rescue services, professional fire brigades, police and the Vienna Health Association. More than 300 emergency services and approximately 130 actors took part. Ultimately, the operations managers came away with a consistently positive assessment.
On Friday, a collision between a passenger train and a dangerous freight train was simulated. According to the exercise assumption, this led to infections and injured travelers. Rehearsals were held Saturday in case a freight train collided with a passenger train, causing injuries and trappings.
Cooperation improved
“The collaboration went smoothly in both practice scenarios,” the ÖBB reported on Sunday. The goal of improving cooperation between emergency organizations and the ÖBB has been achieved. For the first time, drones from the Vienna Fire Department and the Vienna State Police were used in a large-scale security exercise. They have been found to help a lot in getting a clear picture of the situation, saving valuable time in case of an emergency.
It is important to practice complex damage situations as realistically as possible, so that cooperation and processes function optimally, says Mario Rauch, head of the Vienna Professional Fire Brigade. “A large number of injured people were rescued, some of whom were trapped or pumping hazardous substances in gas-tight protective suits to prevent environmental damage.”
Rainer Gottwald, head of the professional rescue service in Vienna, emphasized: “In such a scenario, it is essential to maintain an overview and provide the injured with the right care. Of course, all this is only possible if everything is properly coordinated and the right measures are taken.”
