At Salzburg Airport – Customs seize watches worth 500,000 euros

Date:

Four Turkish citizens wanted to bring luxury watches worth more than half a million euros to Salzburg. However, they did the calculation without the customs officers.

The “Team Travel and Mobile Controls” at the Salzburg customs office found 15 luxury watches, a dial, five watch straps and six warranty cards on four Turkish citizens who wanted to travel from Istanbul to Austria via Salzburg. The incident happened in mid-February, but has only now become known.

Hidden in jacket and trouser pockets
The four men were about to head towards the exit of Salzburg airport when they asked customs to check them. Initially, the four men, aged between 28 and 40, said they were traveling alone. However, this turned out to be wrong: the men had tried to carry their expensive cargo across the Austrian border not only in their suitcases and backpacks, but also in their jacket and trouser pockets.

After the Turks were questioned, they continued their journey, but the watches remain in customs custody until the process is completed. A total of 25 items – watches, watch parts, bracelets or certificates – have been seized and financial criminal proceedings have been initiated against the men.
