A terrible accident happened on the Breton coast on Thursday – a wave ripped to death a couple and their teenage daughter. The couple’s three other children witnessed the tragedy but survived the incident otherwise unharmed.
According to the first testimonies, the victims were fishing on the Plogoff dike when they were swept away by a tidal wave. The accident happened at the end of the tide when the sea was very rough. The waves on the Capist coast were therefore still high and powerful.
However, there was no particularly problematic weather situation, although there is always danger from the sea, as the prefecture announced.
Three people died
About 100 rescuers were looking for the victims, the broadcaster “France Info” reported citing the prefecture. The 33-year-old woman’s body was eventually recovered not far from Pointe du Raz in the evening. Her husband, around 50, died of a heart attack minutes after being rescued from the water.
It was only at night, after an intensive search, that rescuers found the body of the 12-year-old. His siblings were taken to hospital in shock, where an investigation is underway into how the accident could have happened with the help of witness statements. The family would be from the region.
