The German Chancellor gets lost on the red carpet

Date:

Was he already thinking about his visit to Israel, planned for Wednesday? Amid the numerous global crises, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz caused laughter at the Western Balkans summit in Tirana, Albania (see video below) – apparently losing his way on the red carpet and going off track.

The journalists present responded to the German government leader’s misstep with cries of “no, no, no, no!” Having just gotten out of the car, he heads straight for a cordon apparently intended to restrict the path – and simply steps over it. Why exactly he does not follow the clearly laid out red carpet to the building is not clear from the video, which immediately circulated on social media.

Scholz immediately noticed his mistake himself and immediately returned to the carpet, where he was received by Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama.

Scholz “just a human being”
People online are extremely amused by the chancellor’s misstep, but also understanding. “If your head is even fuller than the agenda, it can be fun,” writes a user on X (formerly Twitter). “He is only human and has much more responsibility than any of us,” said another. The rest of the day probably went according to plan.

Mentally already in Israel?
Scholz actually traveled to Albania to discuss rapprochement with the European Union with the heads of state and government of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia.

An explanation for the distracted appearance could be that the Chancellor was already in mind during his visit to Israel – he is expected there on Tuesday. In any case, he has not commented on it yet.
