A car was completely destroyed early Thursday evening in Lower Austria when it collided with a train. As a result of the impact, the car ended up about 20 meters from the dike. The 50-year-old driver survived.
The serious accident happened around 6:40 PM at an unrestricted level crossing in Guntersdorf, Hollabrunn district. According to the police, the 50-year-old “should have missed the red light from the traffic lights because of the low sun” and drove onto the track. The vehicle was completely destroyed by the collision. The wreckage eventually landed on an embankment 20 meters from the accident site.

The 50-year-old survived the devastating accident with serious injuries. After the emergency, he flew a rescue helicopter to Horn State Hospital. The train driver and passengers were not injured.
Wreck recovered and removed
The wreckage was salvaged by volunteer firefighters in Wullersdorf and Guntersdorf. It was pulled back onto the street and hauled away using a winch, pulley and crane, the fire chief said Markus Zahlbrecht of the Wullersdorf volunteer fire brigade. The police, the Red Cross and the team of the Christophorus 2 rescue helicopter were also present.
