Neglected livestock – horror stable on organic farm exposed

Empty feeding and watering places, completely malnourished calves and a cow bleeding profusely from her ear: animal rights activists made this terrifying discovery this weekend on a farmland in the Spittal an der Drau district.

The fact that these dramatic conditions came to light on the certified organic farm is probably due to observant eyewitnesses who discovered the neglected animals and immediately alerted the RespekTiere association.

Last minute rescue
“The call for help probably came at the last minute!” says animal rights activist Tom Putzgruber. The owner neglected not only feeding the animals, but also hygiene: “The conditions were catastrophic,” says Putzgruber, who immediately informed the police and the district administration after the discovery.

“We of course immediately looked at the situation on the farm with a responsible veterinarian,” says Markus Lerch of the Spittal an der Drau district administration. They also spoke to the owner of the organic farm and immediately took action: “The care is immediately optimized.” In addition, the authorities have also initiated administrative criminal proceedings against the farmer.

But all this offers little comfort to animal rights activists. According to the association, authorities have visited the farm several times in the past and complained about conditions on the farm. “Why the operation was not monitored and how such conditions could arise again must now be clarified,” the animal rights activists agree.
