Terrible accident on the western highway between St. Florian and the Linz junction Tuesday morning. A semi-trailer truck left the road for an unknown reason and crashed near an underpass. Two people were seriously injured.
Around 11.15 am on Tuesday, a 60-year-old Turkish citizen from Vorarlberg was driving a tractor-trailer along the A1 towards Salzburg. A 27-year-old Syrian from Linz sat in the passenger seat. For reasons still unclear, he slipped, crashed into the sound barrier, broke through the railing of a bridge and fell about 50 feet into the streambed below.
Fuel flowed into the stream
The 60-year-old driver was thrown from the cab and the passenger fell along with the truck. Both were seriously injured: the driver was flown to the hospital by ambulance and the passenger by the medical emergency helicopter “Christophorus 10”. After fuel leaked as a result of the accident, the fire brigades involved had to remove the contaminated soil and carried out extensive rescue work together with a specialized company.
Lane closed
An expert body from the Linz magistrate was also called in to take further measures regarding the fuel leak. During the recording of the accident, both the emergency lane and the right lane were closed, causing traffic disruption.
