Blocked for years – hanging out on the beach volleyball court in Augarten. in Vienna

Date:

What sports-loving Vienna have experienced in the Augarten over the past 23 months can safely be described as teasing. Because since then, the only beach volleyball court in the city center where you can play for free has been closed.

In fact, they just want to play beach volleyball with friends every now and then. Only: that is not allowed. Because for almost two years now, a sports complex in Viennese Augarten, which is very popular with many Viennese, has been closed. The beach volleyball court, which is located right next to one of the two anti-aircraft towers, is the only free, publicly accessible inner-city sand field with a net.

Since the European Beach Volleyball and Grand Slam Championships also fueled a real boom in the sport, his Viennese following has grown steadily in recent years.

Closed in 2020, never reopened
But that’s the end now. Or rather, 2020 was already the end of it. The reason for this is renovation work that was announced at the time and was also necessary. The sand layer got thinner and thinner, often leading to injuries to the players. So far good. The Federal Gardens closed off the square and announced a renovation in mid-August 2020. So far – despite repeated requests – nothing has come of this. Nothing has worked since then, the enthusiastic hobby athletes can no longer find a place to play their balls over the net.

Lawsuit is responsible for blocking
According to the Federal Gardens, the reason is a pending case against the Republic of Austria in the court of Leopoldstadt. An expert judgment (reportedly related to a player’s past injury) is currently pending.

“On the basis of this report and the resulting need for renovation, the Austrian Federal Gardens, in consultation with the Burghauptmannschaft Österreich, will decide whether the beach volleyball court will be renovated and will make efforts to take the appropriate steps (determination and planning of the necessary measures ) as quickly as possible”. , it is[calledArenovationinthecurrentseasonthereforeseemsmorethanunlikely[genaamdEenverbouwinginhethuidigeseizoenlijktdanookmeerdanonwaarschijnlijk

Two more unplayable places
The farce is completed by two more places that the players in the Augarten could theoretically transfer to. But only theoretically, because both are purely reserved for school sports – even if they are used very little. They are now arguing for at least a temporary opening to the general public outside school hours.
