Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg has been charged in London with disturbing public order. The 20-year-old was temporarily arrested on Tuesday evening when she refused to follow police orders during a protest with others.
The protest outside a hotel in central London targeted a meeting of energy managers. A total of 26 people were charged. The regulations that Thunberg is alleged to have broken are part of a controversial judicial reform by the conservative government, which gives police broad powers to regulate protests. It only came into effect last year.
Thunberg remains free until his court hearing on November 15. In Britain, police usually issue a provisional charge before the prosecutor files new charges. For minor violations, the police will continue to prosecute you.
The protest was aimed at the industry that makes its money from fossil fuels. For example, signs say ‘Stop new oil and gas’ and ‘Wrong side of history’. The protesters are said to have tried to block access to a hotel in central London.
Fines for climate activist
Greta Thunberg was recently sentenced for the second time to a fine of almost 390 euros for disobeying law enforcement authorities. She denied a criminal offense at the court in Malmö. She spoke of a climate crisis that threatens both health and life.
