Because Italy’s teaching staff is largely female, the government in Rome is now introducing male quotas in schools.
According to a report in the Milanese daily “Corriere della Sera”, the quota scheme mainly concerns the positions of directors. In the next tender for 587 director positions, preference will be given to male candidates in the event of a tie.
Male dominance has been destroyed
Until the early 2000s, two-thirds of school principals were men. That has now changed. The vast majority of candidates for the 587 headteacher positions are likely to be women. The principle of male quotas will also be introduced in the tender procedures for the recruitment of teachers that the government is planning.
Female teachers and school principals currently make up a total of 83 percent of the teaching staff. In primary schools this value is even 95 percent.
