4 years on the run – explosive end to the kidnapping of little “Phin”

Date:

The investigation into the spectacular case of the Burgenland woman who fled through Europe with her child since 2019 is in full swing. At home, the 36-year-old became the focus of investigators. She narrowly escaped the police once, but not again…

The case of Desiree Jaqueline K. (36) from the Oberwart district caused an international stir. When the court in Wiener Neustadt (Lower Austria) decided to award sole custody to the boy’s father on February 12, 2019, the mother grabbed her son and ran away with him in an old car.

According to investigators, their escape was probably planned and helpers supported the highly explosive tour. The first stage from Austria led to Switzerland to visit a friend. Almost two weeks later, the police received the missing persons report. But K. and her child, nicknamed ‘Phin’, were already on their way to Spain. After a stay in Barcelona at the beginning of March, the mother ended up in Portugal. In the southern Alentejo region, the Burgenland resident joined a hiking community of two Germans. “K. asked her family to transfer money to the municipality,” the search report said. At that time, a report had already been drawn up for K..

After four years on the run: return home
After fleeing through Europe for more than four years, the kidnapper returned home. With a man from Lithuania behind the wheel of a minibus, the 36-year-old drove to a fishing pond in Burgau in the Styria-Burgenland border region in the early morning hours of October 4 and was spotted. That’s where the researchers got it. But the woman they were looking for must have smelled the fuse; she had disappeared. The man was apparently a casual acquaintance. However, it is unlikely that the main suspect knew anything about the child abduction. He is at large.

Refugee arrested by police
The trap was opened on October 5. Desiree Jaqueline K. was spotted again in a minivan. This time the 36-year-old appeared at Hochkogel in the municipality of Burgauberg-Neudauberg in the Güssing district. Now she could no longer escape the police and the investigators of the State Criminal Investigation Department. After her arrest, she was – as reported – transferred to Eisenstadt prison. “The police’s operational target search was a masterpiece. “All legally permitted options have been exhausted,” the successful use has been praised in legal circles.
