In Vienna, nursery and after-school staff and leisure teachers will once again take to the streets this Tuesday to protest for better conditions. Many facilities therefore remain closed, affecting approximately 100,000 children and their families.
While the homes of most private providers remain intact, there is at least an emergency operation in the municipal facilities that are obliged to maintain supplies. Afternoon care for students has also largely been abolished.
First, company meetings were on the agenda, then, according to the union, demonstrations will take place on the Ringstrasse from 11 am.
Since the autumn of 2021, nursery school staff, who are increasingly faced with staff shortages, have protested several times for better conditions. More time, space, money and more staff are needed.
Alarming analysis of women in childcare
An alarming analysis from the unionized Momentum Institute was only published on Monday. The bottom line: When women work in child care, they are often close to the poverty line — or even below it in some states.
Women in childcare receive an average net salary of 1,464 euros. This would put them only 72 euros above the at-risk-of-poverty threshold. Vienna comes first with 1,661 euros. According to the analysis, work in the states of Tyrol, Upper Austria and Salzburg is even paid below the at-risk-of-poverty threshold.
