Several people are missing on Tuesday morning after two cargo ships collided in the German Bight in the North Sea. The search for the shipwrecked crew continues, accident management said. Accordingly, one person was rescued from the water and provided medical care.
According to accident management, the accident took place approximately 22 kilometers southwest of the island of Helgoland and 31 kilometers northeast of the island of Langeoog. Accordingly, the freighters Polesie and Verity collided early on Tuesday morning around 5am.
Cargo ship sank after collision
The accident control, which took over overall control of the operation, assumed that the Verity had sunk as a result of the collision. The Polesie was said to be buoyant. She has 22 people on board. It was initially unclear how many people were missing. A spokeswoman for accident control was initially unable to provide any information.
Ships and helicopters in action
Numerous ships and a German Navy helicopter were used to search for the missing persons. Two sea rescue cruisers from the German Association for the Rescue of Shipwrecked Persons (DGzRS) are involved.
The accident control flew a sensor aircraft over the sea area to obtain more detailed information. A cruise ship sailing in the sea area is also supporting the search. People could receive medical care there, it was said. There are doctors on board. Additional medical personnel would be flown to the accident scene by helicopter.
