A 24-year-old in Vienna-Leopoldstadt carried out a rather ill-advised action on Monday evening. After the apparently drunk man arrived at a friend’s apartment, he quickly detonated a ball bomb. Published police photos of the apartment reveal its horrific size.
Attentive passers-by alerted the emergency services around 9:40 PM after hearing a loud bang. Fortunately, the Vienna fire brigade was unable to detect any fire on site.
Accidentally ignited
According to police, the 24-year-old was alone visiting the apartment in question. During interrogation, he stated that he accidentally detonated the illegally acquired bomb when he wanted to show it to his friend.
Huge material damage
The 24-year-old suffered minor injuries in the incident. He is in the hospital. All furniture and objects in the kitchen, as well as a glass door, were severely damaged.
Even more fireworks secured
During further investigation, several prohibited flash bangs were found and seized in the apartment. The 24-year-old is on trial on suspicion of endangering physical safety and violations of the Pyrotechnics Act.
