Former US President Donald Trump confused Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during a campaign speech in the small town of Derry, New Hampshire on Monday evening.
“There is this man, Viktor Orbán, has anyone ever heard of him?” Trump asked the audience at the New England Sports Center in Derry, but gave the (wrong) answer. “He is probably one of the strongest leaders in the world. He is the leader of Türkiye,” he explained. In fact, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is the President of Turkey.
According to the American newspaper ‘Politico’, Trump further said that Orbán had a ‘front’ with Russia. Here too, the ex-president was wrong again, as neither Turkey nor Hungary has a common border with Russia.
Orbán supported Trump during the 2016 election campaign
Trump had previously praised Orbán, who opposes migration and LGBTQ rights, and described his governing style as “illiberal democracy.” The Hungarian head of government was the first European head of state to support Trump’s campaign for the US presidency in 2016. “Come back, Mr. President. “Make America great again and bring us peace,” Orbán demanded this spring during a meeting of the American Conservative Political Action Coalition (CPAC).
Since his election as prime minister in 2010, Orbán has been accused of systematically restricting human rights in Hungary and undermining the rule of law. He himself described his form of government for the first time in 2014 as ‘illiberal democracy’.
