Nearly 700,000 Americans live in Israel and Lebanon. If the situation deteriorates further, a possible mass evacuation could follow. Logistically that would be quite a challenge.
As the Washington Post reported, the US government is currently preparing for this possibility. The daily quoted four US officials. According to State Department estimates, approximately 600,000 American citizens lived in Israel and another 86,000 in Lebanon at the time of the Hamas attack.
An evacuation of this magnitude is seen as a worst-case scenario, i.e. a scenario in which the worst of all conceivable cases occurs. In this case, Air Force aircraft and aircraft carriers currently stationed in the region would have to be used to fly out U.S. citizens. According to the report, a detailed emergency plan should not yet be discussed publicly so as not to cause panic among those affected in the region.
Recommendation for increased caution
In recent days, concerns have increased about the participation of other actors in the conflict, such as Hezbollah. That’s why the US State Department has issued a recommendation to all citizens worldwide to ‘exercise more caution’.
“Tensions in various places around the world” are increasing, there is the potential for terrorist attacks and there may also be demonstrations or violent actions against American citizens. The US recently increased its military presence in the region (see video above).
Danger of war on two fronts
The warning was, among other things, a response to the demonstrations that broke out in response to the war between Israel and Hamas. Hezbollah in Lebanon has further increased the US government’s concerns.
The members of the terrorist group have been trained and armed by the Iranian side for a long time. There are currently repeated fears that Hezbollah could attack Israel from the north and ignite a war on two fronts. There have already been firefights along the shared border.
