The Vienna Medical Association does not want to call on doctors in hospitals to strike for the time being. Instead, a protest march is planned for December 4. They did not want to strike during the flu season, it was said on Tuesday.
Among other things, a 30 percent higher salary and a third more staff are needed. “It is enough for us,” the chairman of the doctors employed by the Curia, Stefan Ferenci, assured at a press conference. Working conditions are becoming increasingly worse. The criticism focuses mainly on the city. They complain that they are unwilling to have constructive discussions.
Protest march on December 4
The demands were not “absurd or quixotic,” Ferenci assured. So on December 4 they want to tour Vienna in the afternoon. The outpatient clinics in hospitals must in any case close on time, it was emphasized. That is often not the case. However, there should not be any major consequences for business operations.
There will be no strikes in the near future. “Industrial action in winter is a certain challenge,” the Curia chief said. The safety of the patients comes first. People want to be careful with the expected flu wave.
No strikes during flu season
A strike would only be possible if the disease situation in Vienna allowed it, Ferenci explained. But you generally don’t want to rule out such a situation. If there is no willingness to talk at the town hall or with Public Health Councilor Peter Hacker (SPÖ), this could follow in the spring, it was said.
“Without us Vienna will die”
After the rally in December, the intention is to draw attention to the problem with campaigns. The first posters and flyers are already available. ‘Without us Vienna will die’, you can read on it. “Let’s save lives together. And let’s improve working conditions together,” said Curia Vice-President Anna Kreil.
Ferenci reports that there are also discussions with the union about salary negotiations. There has been “very positive feedback” from there. The chamber official assured that the 30 percent increase stated by the chamber in its demand letter was not too high.
