German convicted – fake police officer defrauded more than 50,000 euros

Date:

The scam with calls to bona fide victims is currently extremely “fashionable”: a German (31) posing as a police officer was convicted and has now been sentenced by the Innsbruck Regional Court – but not only for that.

The suspect was accused of a whole series of frauds. The worst cases occurred in Reutte in the summer of last year. There he persuaded his victim to hand over 52,900 euros in cash. With a currently common scam: The German had posed as a police officer and claimed that due to a burglary in the neighborhood, there were indications that burglars were breaking into the victim’s home. It would be better to give the money to the police (him!).

Also forged debts
In another case, he forged gambling debts and managed to get an acquaintance to transfer 21,400 euros. The defendant also worked as a “locksmith” or “installer” and overcharged several customers for these services.

The network in Turkey is said to be behind it
Behind this lies a “large network in Turkey” for which the suspect worked, as was mentioned several times in the trial. “You are more of a small cog in the game, but that is also necessary,” the judge argued in his judgment.

He imposed – already legally binding – a prison sentence of 16 months, five of which were unconditional. The German apologized, promised repayments and will soon be released from a long prison sentence.
