Many people rely on blood donations due to illness or accidents, but there is often a shortage of canned blood, especially for rare blood types. Could artificial blood from the laboratory be the solution? In Graz people believe in this vision.
Blood is urgently needed: in Austria a patient needs a transfusion every 90 seconds, which equates to almost 1,000 blood units per day. In Styria alone there are 50,000 per year. One unit of blood can save up to three lives. How is this possible? After whole blood donation, the collected blood is separated into its three main components: red blood cells (erythrocytes), platelets (thrombocytes) and blood plasma.
