176 fire brigade operations – storms in Carinthia: hailstones the size of a golf ball

Date:

A short but violent thunderstorm with hailstones the size of a golf ball fell in the Klagenfurt district on Friday evening. Especially in Viktring and Krumpendorf, the hailstones fell like projectiles to the ground and probably caused great damage. Numerous fire brigades were in constant use. The state alarm and warning center took stock at midnight: 40 weirs were in 176 storm operations. According to an initial estimate by the Austrian hail insurance company, damage to agriculture alone amounts to half a million euros.

“I don’t remember such big hailstones. I’ve lived in Krumpendorf for more than ten years, but that was terrible,” a woman from Krumpendorf told the “Krone”. The same happened to the inhabitants of Viktring. The hailstones, the size of a golf ball, partially destroyed tents, garden facilities and canopies. Cars can also be damaged.

All fire brigades in Klagenfurt, Viktring and Krumpendorf are currently in continuous operation. The Krumpendorf fire brigade alone had to be called out 14 times in the evening. But it went further as a new storm front swept across parts of Carinthia.

The many visitors to the harbor festival in Klagenfurt’s eastern bay also had to flee. Also in Moosburg the damage from the hail is probably enormous. A “Krone” reader reports on shredded crops, smashed windows, smashed roof tiles, ruined vegetable gardens and leafless fruit trees.

The fire brigades were also deployed in the Feldkirchen district. The storm hit there too.

Almost 100 liters per square meter
Shortly after 6 p.m., the heavy rainfall had already flooded several cellars, according to the LAWZ in its balance sheet. “The amount of rain was considerable, in some places the intensity of precipitation was almost 100 liters per square meter in a few hours,” says Hans-Jörg Rossbacher of the LAWZ The sometimes very gusty wind knocked over trees, including roads that were impassable as a result.

The focus of the operations was in Krumpendorf, Pörtschach, Moosburg, Feldkirchen, Friesach, a thunderstorm cell also hit Wolfsberg and St. Andrä intensively, there were floods and flooded cellars.
