How proud are Austrians of their country right now? krone.tv asks this question on the occasion of the national holiday. While we once again had the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes of the Republic on October 26 this year, many Austrians reacted quite dissatisfied.
At this point, respondents to the survey in Vienna were not entirely sure whether they could really be proud of their country. Many passers-by waved goodbye to me. The tenor: “I’d rather not say anything about that.” “You can be proud, but it’s getting harder and harder,” one gentleman explains. “We don’t hear about the war in Ukraine anymore because that’s what happened in Israel. I don’t know what to think.”
Thanks to its neutrality, Austria will at least not get involved in wars, says another passer-by. “The way the federal military is currently being used is how it should remain.”
“Political competition is disruptive”
The political situation within Austria was also an issue: one lady was particularly bothered by the constant ‘competition’. “That shouldn’t be the case. This continued hostility, regardless of party, bothers me enormously.”
“I am proud to be Austrian,” finally explains a young woman who attended the primary education demonstration on Thursday. “We have a lot of freedom in Austria.”
