The border police – especially in Burgenland – are currently reminded daily of the 1990s blockbuster about a marmot – but it is anything but a comedy set in the border area.
It is bitterly serious: as reported, the smuggling mafia is constantly working on new tricks to get migrants into the country illegally. The domestic authorities are countering this with targeted actions at border crossings and on transit routes.
And they can certainly achieve significant success. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, 540 smugglers have been identified and arrested since the beginning of the year – almost as many as in the comparable period of 2022, although apprehensions of illegal immigrants have fallen by more than 40 percent. The bottom line is that more smugglers are taken out of circulation than there are illegal people entering the country.
However, migration pressure on the Balkan route remains high. In recent weeks there has been a dramatic increase in attacks by large groups from Syria, Afghanistan and Turkey. In most cases the destination is Germany.
