At Gay Pride parties – monkey pox: suspected source of infection in the Canary Islands

Date:

Spanish authorities are investigating suspicions that gay pride celebrations on the holiday island of Gran Canaria could be another source of monkeypox infection. From May 5 to 15, about 80,000 people from Spain and many other countries took part in the “Maspalomas Pride”, which was mainly attended by homosexuals.

The newspaper “El País” reported this on Saturday, citing sources in the health sector. Men from Italy, Madrid and the neighboring island of Tenerife, where the virus has been diagnosed, are said to have taken part in the celebrations. Intimate contacts are a possible transmission route for the virus.

The authorities closed the “Sauna Paraíso” in Madrid on Friday because several men are said to have been infected there too. So far, 30 cases of monkey pox have been identified in Spain. There are also 23 more suspected cases.

Already 23 cases in Portugal
The local newspaper “Público” wrote about the situation in Portugal that now 23 cases have been confirmed. The first infected person to be registered in Germany had traveled to Germany from Portugal via Spain, but it was initially unclear whether he was infected in either of the two countries.

Monkeypox virus infections are being reported in more and more countries. Fever, severe headache, back pain, sore throat, cough and often swelling of the lymph nodes are possible symptoms (see also the video above). A rash that spreads from the face to the body is also typical. Blindness and disfiguring scars rarely occur as permanent damage.

WHO warns of spread in Europe
Monkeypox, which is especially widespread in Central and West Africa, has been detected in several European and North American countries since early May. After the first cases in Britain, there were also reports from the US and several European countries. So far, no case has been reported in Austria. The World Health Organization (WHO) has already warned about the spread of monkeypox in Europe. In the summer, mass events, festivals, and parties could power the transmission.
