According to Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, the government in Moscow is prepared to discuss a solution to the crisis in Ukraine and continued ‘coexistence’ with the West under certain conditions. Western states must stop seeking Russia’s strategic defeat, Shoigu said at a military forum in China. The conditions for such conversations are therefore not yet in place.
“It is also important to ensure equal relations between all nuclear powers and the permanent members of the UN Security Council, which have a special responsibility for maintaining peace and global stability,” the Russian Defense Minister continued.
Shoigu criticizes the increase in NATO troops
Shoigu also accused Western states of seeking to expand the conflict in Ukraine into the Asia-Pacific region. NATO is masking an expansion of its forces in the Asia-Pacific region with a “demonstrated desire for dialogue,” Russian news agency Tass quoted Shoigu as saying in a speech at the three-day Xiangshan Military Diplomacy Forum in China. NATO countries encouraged an arms race in the region and increased their military presence and the frequency and scope of military exercises.
At the same time, he assured that Russia would not lower the threshold for the use of nuclear weapons. Russia’s termination of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty does not mean the end of the agreement, Shoigu said.
