Hatred of Jews in Dagestan – Schallenberg: Images are “deeply frightening”

Date:

The conflict in the Middle East is leading to anti-Jewish attacks worldwide. On Sunday, dozens of men in the Muslim-majority republic stormed the Russian airport in search of Israelis and Jews. There were numerous arrests and injuries – Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg (ÖVP) is shocked.

Schallenberg spoke out via X (formerly Twitter). In English, he said: “The images from #Makhachkala airport in #Dagestan are very frightening. They remind us of the darkest times. Austria is committed to the fight against anti-Semitism in all its forms, wherever and whenever, and rejects any incitement to violence. #NeverAgain is now.”

60 people arrested, several police officers were injured
According to information from Moscow, 60 people were arrested on Monday morning. “More than 150 active participants in the riots have been identified, of which 60 have been arrested,” the Russian Interior Ministry said. Nine police officers were injured, two of them were taken to hospital. The officials also took full control of the airport in the city of Makhachkala.

The Ministry of Health in Dagestan announced on Sunday evening that twenty people were injured in Sunday’s riots in Makhachkala. Previously, rumors circulated about an incoming plane from Israel. The US condemned the incident and Israel called on Russia to protect its citizens.

Track stormed, fences broken
According to media reports, the attackers stormed onto both the tarmac and the roof of Makhachkala Airport. Videos posted on the online network Telegram show men breaking through fences, kicking in doors in the terminal and trying to check cars leaving the airport. There were “injured people who received medical attention” in the storm, the Health Ministry said in the evening, without further details.

According to the independent media Sota, there had previously been a demonstration in front of the airport. The men tried to check passengers’ passports looking for Israeli citizens or Jews. Video footage showed someone holding a sign that read: “There is no place for child murderers in Dagestan.” Others shouted “Allahu Akbar” (God is great). The authenticity of the videos could not initially be verified.

The airport will remain closed for the time being
According to the Russian Aviation Authority, Makhachkala Airport was temporarily closed and security forces were deployed to the site. The situation is back under control, the government of the Caucasus Republic reported to Telegram. She called on the crowd to stop all “illegal acts.” At the same time, apparently referring to the war between Israel and Hamas, authorities stated that “it is not easy for any of us to witness the slaughter of a civilian population, the Palestinian people.”

Late in the evening, Russia’s aviation authority declared the airport “free of civilians entering without permission.” The airport will remain closed until November 6.

US is “unequivocal”
After the incident, Israel called on Russia to protect all Israeli citizens. His country expects Russian authorities to “protect all Israeli citizens and all Jews and take decisive action against rioters and incitement to violence against Jews and Israelis,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said.

The US condemned the “anti-Semitic protests” in Dagestan. “The United States unequivocally stands with the entire Jewish community in light of the global rise of anti-Semitism,” National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said on the online service X.
