Effectively minimize the risks of HPV infections: a free vaccination campaign for the young generation in Lower Austria reduces the risk of cancer by up to 90 percent.
A small injection can reduce the risk of cancer by up to 90 percent. At least when it comes to HPV vaccinations. Human papillomaviruses (HPV) are among the most common sexually transmitted infections and cause many forms of cancer, such as cervical cancer. An HPV vaccination has a major effect, especially at a young age. That is why the state is offering a free vaccination offer for students aged nine and older (until December 31, 2025).
About 80 percent of people will become infected with HPV during their lifetime. To ensure the broadest possible cancer prevention for boys, the free HPV vaccination campaign has now been extended until their 30th birthday, state councilors Ulrike Königsberger-Ludwig and Christiane Teschl-Hofmeister explain.
Infections are passed on unnoticed
“The HPV vaccination campaign is generally offered free of charge to students. First, young people are extensively informed about the infection, its spread, the routes of infection and effects and therefore about the background to timely vaccination against HPV. In many cases, the risks of HPV among the younger generation are hardly known,” says medical officer Elisabeth Hecher-Korinek of the Neunkirchen district administration.
