According to the current precipitation forecast from GeoSphere Austria, heavy rainfall is expected in parts of Tyrol from today, Monday afternoon. The focus is on South-East Tyrol – both in the Lienz region and in the Puster and Gail valleys.
Up to 80 liters per square meter
“A southern congestion in combination with a cold front causes heavy precipitation, sometimes alternating with thunderstorms. Precipitation amounts of up to 80 liters per square meter are expected,” the state of Tyrol warned in a press release.
Mudslides, landslides and flooding possible
Local mudslides, landslides and floods may occur as a result of the forecast rainfall amounts. GeoSphere Austria has therefore issued the warning level “Orange” for the most affected areas.
The population is urged to avoid unnecessary travel and walks and to close windows, doors and skylights.
The cold front causes the snow line to drop
On the northern side of the Alps, strong winds are still blowing on Monday, especially in the southern valleys of North Tyrol, gusts of between 60 and 80 km/h can be expected until the night. On the mountains the Föhn storm reaches more than 100 km/h. A cold front will move across Austria on Tuesday with rain showers and isolated thunderstorms in the south. The snowfall line drops to 1,600 to 2,000 meters.
