Italians on the glacier – stuck upside down in a crevasse at a depth of ten meters

Date:

An Italian holidaymaker in the furthest Zillertal had to fear for his life: He was snowboarding away from the secured slopes when it suddenly went downhill – a crevasse. Fortunately, there were witnesses to the incident and they immediately alerted the emergency services. . .

The accident happened on Saturday, but only became known on Monday: the 42-year-old Italian was traveling with a colleague in the Hintertux Glacier ski area. Around 2 p.m., they rode together on their snowboards in the open, glacier area. The athlete in front may have missed a crevasse and then fell into it with his snowboard. He became stuck upside down at a depth of about ten meters.

Two helicopters in use
Uninvolved eyewitnesses then made an emergency call. The alerted mountain rescue service from Tux was flown to the accident site with the Alpin 5 emergency medical helicopter and the Libelle Tirol police helicopter and then carried out the crevasse rescue. Practiced hundreds of times, but given the depth in which the Italian was stuck, it was anything but child’s play. After being rescued from the Alpin 5, the holidaymaker was flown to the clinic in Innsbruck with significant injuries.
