The Bavarian state parliament lifted the immunity of AfD MP Daniel Halemba on Monday. This makes it legally clear that the investigation against the 22-year-old on suspicion of incitement to hatred can continue. The politician is also said to have used the symbols of anti-constitutional organizations.
As reported, the accusations were confirmed and the AfD politician was arrested on Monday morning. The Würzburg public prosecutor’s office had been looking for him for days with an arrest warrant. The order was reissued Monday evening, subject to certain conditions. Halemba must report to the police once a week at his home in Würzburg. Moreover, according to Chief Public Prosecutor Thorsten Seebach, he is prohibited from having contact with members of the “Brschenschaft Teutonia Prag zu Würzburg”.
Member of the association for two years
So far, Daniel Halemba has denied all allegations against him. He views the arrest warrant as politically motivated and has already commented on it in a video (see video above). According to his own information, he has been a member of the fraternity since 2021, which was raided in September. At the time, it was suspected that the student house would contain objects with symbols of the National Socialist Party, NSDAP, as well as racist stickers and writings.
Almost all of these have now been evaluated. “The allegations have been confirmed for us,” says a spokesperson for the Public Prosecution Service. The evaluation of data carriers is still ongoing. The criticism of the approach came not entirely surprisingly from the chairman of the AfD faction in the Bavarian state parliament, Katrin Ebner-Steiner. “A contrived reason for detention significantly and mildly violates the rights of the opposition,” she said on Monday.
AfD: “Indication of poverty for democracy”
The behavior of the Würzburg Public Prosecutor’s Office is an “indication of poverty” for democracy. The group will not be intimidated by this repression. Ultimately, all political groups, except the AfD, voted in favor of lifting Halemba’s immunity. This makes it clear that the investigation can continue.
