The settlement of the West Bank is a contentious and contentious issue in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. There are now 279 Israeli settlements there. But: only about half of them have been approved by the Israeli government.
Since 1967 (after the Six-Day War), Israelis have begun building settlements on territory claimed by the Palestinians. But these are widely considered illegal by the international community because they violate international law (see box below). Nevertheless, hundreds of such settlements have been built over the years and the number of Israeli settlers in the West Bank has steadily increased.
