A farmer from Swabia, Germany has been jailed for two years and ten months after seriously neglecting his cows. The highest verdict yet for animal cruelty among our neighbors has sparked Austrian animal rights activists into action. They also demand higher penalties and stricter laws from us.
It is the highest unconditional sentence ever imposed for animal welfare violations in Germany: a farmer from Bad Grönenbach in Swabia is sentenced to two years and ten months in prison. He had neglected sick cows on the farm so badly that they had to be killed. “This is ignorance of animal protection,” the judge said in his ruling, which received much applause from animal rights activists.
Eight or nine months probation for killed dogs
The ruling is also being complied with in Austria. Animal rights activists criticize that the punishments in this country are far too lenient. “As a reward for confessions, you get cases dismissed in exchange for fines. “Unbelievably, there have never been actual prison sentences for animal cruelty in Austria,” Pfotenhilfe spokesperson Jürgen Stadler cannot understand the penalties for animal cruelty. As examples he mentions a Maltese dog that was kicked to death and whose tormentor was given a nine-month probation, and the dog in Altlengbach that was gagged and thrown into a well – a probationary period of eight months.
Criminal law expert: Common to a limited extent among first-time offenders
Stadler calls for an increase in the penalty to five years in prison; currently this is a maximum of two years. “A third to a half of what is possible is a normal punishment for novice offenders,” explains criminal law expert Alois Birklbauer. He believes that a higher sentence cannot prevent animal abuse.
