A badly damaged BMW, but no steering wheel – that’s what Swiss police officers found on Schwägalpstrasse (canton Appenzell Ausserhoden) on Wednesday evening. The driver of the accident was only discovered after 90 minutes – just in time before his health deteriorated dramatically.
Shortly before 6:30 p.m., the cantonal emergency call center of Appenzell Ausserhoden received an automatic vehicle accident alarm. The cantonal police patrols found the accident vehicle on Schwägalpstrasse, in a hairpin bend in the Kleinwald area. The powerful BMW crashed straight into a rolling meadow around the bend. However, there was no trace of the driver or any passenger.

While searching for possible occupants of the vehicle, a male person was found by a cantonal police patrol in the Steinfluh area around 8 p.m. The 41-year-old initially only complained of mild back pain. During the initial care by the police officers present, the man’s health deteriorated noticeably.
