The aid organization Doctors Without Borders has criticized the Greek government’s treatment of migrants. People were “forcibly detained and driven back to Turkey in lifeboats,” a report said. This is based on statements from those affected and medical data between August 2021 and July 2023.
Conditions on the Greek islands of Lesbos and Samos were analyzed. According to Doctors Without Borders, migrants have reported being “beaten and handcuffed” at times and subjected to humiliating examinations. Moreover, their property was allegedly taken away.
Other migrants described being intercepted by uniformed or masked men upon arrival. They said they were beaten with clubs and clubs and verbally abused.
Pushed back out to sea
An important point in the report is also the so-called pushbacks, the illegal pushing back of asylum seekers. Migrants on Lesbos and Samos said they were forcibly pushed into the sea without their belongings. Doctors Without Borders criticized that neither the Greek authorities nor the EU would be held responsible – “despite extensive and credible evidence.”
The aid organization says it has provided emergency medical care to almost 8,000 people at Greece’s borders in the past two years, including 1,500 children. Local authorities are said to have repeatedly postponed their activities.
The Greek ministry did not respond to a request from the AFP news agency on Thursday. The government recently strengthened the coast guard. In principle, the accusations are not new (see video above). Aid organizations regularly accuse the country of illegally and forcibly deporting migrants to Turkish waters.
