It was on the Gamskogelgrat (Murtal district) at 2,386 meters above sea level in very steep terrain when two mountaineers – a 38-year-old from Kirchdorf (Upper Austria) and a German (63) – encountered an emergency situation early Saturday afternoon; the Upper Austrian suffered serious injuries in a fall, the second minor. Mountain rescue workers and an army helicopter were able to free the mountaineers from the emergency.
The two experienced – and well-equipped – mountaineers found themselves in a precarious situation early in the afternoon, in the middle of impassable, steep terrain. The 38-year-old from Upper Austria may have climbed around a boulder in the Gamskogel area, lost his balance and fell.
pressed against rocks
Being properly secured with a rope, his companion was able to hold him and stop his fall after about 20 meters. But the man was badly injured in the left leg, his mountaineer suffered abrasions when he was pressed against the rock.
The climbers then made an emergency call and notified emergency services.
Strong wind stopped ambulance helicopter
Specialists from the Hohentauern and Knittelfeld mountain rescue services and the Alpine Police were immediately alerted by the Styrian Provincial Warning Center and made their way to the site from both sides of the valley. Dramatic: In addition, the emergency doctor helicopter Christophorus 17 was alerted, but it was unable to fly to the location due to the strong wind!
Great mountain rescue alarm
A great alarm followed for the mountain rescue services from the Murtal area (Knittelfeld, Judenburg, Zeltweg, Pöls areas) and Liezen (Hohentauern, Rottenmann, Admont, Trieben, Selzthal, Rottenmann, Liezen). The army helicopter Alouette III from Aigen im Ennstal was also requested. After an overflight by the army helicopter, the badly injured alpinist and his slightly injured companion were rescued.
After emergency medical first aid at a stopover near the valley, the slightly injured mountaineer was handed over to the Red Cross and the seriously injured person was flown by the army helicopter Alouette III to the accident hospital in Kalwang.
The rescue attempts from the ground with 60 troops could be cancelled.
